It seems clear that since it’s opened, the G casino – the most northerly casino in the UK-  has taken Aberdeen’s casino trade and dominated it. The location is pretty central on Union Street, and given the amount of money in Aberdeen (due to the oil trade) it seems like they’re making a killing with this site.

It’s nothing special or different to look at to be honest, being another carbon copy G model, although it’s been around a little while now and seems to get very busy, so it’s not quite looking 100%.

The slots area is of course fantastic with top of the line gear (including the awesome “Invaders from the Planet Moolah” – see Grosvenor Reading review for details) and a quiz machine, suggesting that the place might get patronised by the millions of students in and around Aberdeen. It can be a slightly odd place to walk around, Aberdeen, I think the contrast between some well off oil workers and some more desperate individuals can be stark. While the streets outside the casino can be a little uncomfortable, the casino itself has security and feels fine. I do remember leaving this place once at about 5am to be approached by a very well refreshed gentleman who asked me for directions to “where all the whores are”.  I was of course charmed, and attempted to assist this fine advert for mankind by directing him to the docks, although given how utterly spannered he was, I doubt he’d have got much value for money – imagine trying to get a marshmallow into a moneybox. It’s also a bit disconcerting leaving the place at 4am-ish to find it’s light outside –  the perils of being in the extreme north, I imagine it’s no fun in winter.

Anyway, looking around the site, there the usual large poker room, and I can confirm that beverage-impaired locals can indeed be fine opponents in the cash games, say around 3am, perhaps …?! I also urge anyone who visits the site to tell me what the poker room décor is all about, it looked like dozens of truncated shower hoses to me.

In any case, it’s a lively old spot and well worth a visit should you find yourself in the Granite City.
